Farne Islands

There are 28 islands in The Farne Islands, and they can only be seen a very low tide. They consist of The Outer Farnes and The Inner Farnes. The Inner Farne is the largest of all the islands at 16 acres. Sovereign Farne Island Tours run from Easter to October weather permitting. When you stay at The Olde School House you will get a discount from Sovereign.

Members of the national trust are aloud to land on the islands for free but there will be a fee to non members.

The trips give you a full running commentary about all the history of the islands and they will take you close up to see the birds and grey seals.

A trip not to be missed.

As has been the trend in recent years, the breeding seabird populations continued to increase with the Razorbill (13%) and the Guillemots (2%) advancing once again. The season 2006 brought the spectacular confirmation of a breeding pair of Red-breasted Merganser, the first in the islands history. The Farnes surpassed the 100,000 breeding pairs mark for the second consecutive year.

The rocks and strong tides around the Farne Islands have always been treacherous to ships so the first lighthouses were built there in 1776, on The Inner Farne and Staple Island. The Staple light was replaced in 1796 by another on The Brownsman Island but the area was still to hazardous. As a result The Longstone light was built by Joseph Nelson.
